I once thought everyone knew these basic haircare tips but after speaking to my roommates I learned that I was wrong. Your hair's heath is important so follow these rules and tips and your hair will be healthier than ever.
1. Washing your hair every day is actually bad for your hair! Shampoo actually strips your hair of its natural oils making it dry.
What you should do instead: wash your hair every other day, the rule of thumb is that you shouldn't wash your hair more than 4 times a week.
2. Your roots are the healthiest part of your hair so they do not need the extra nourishment from conditioner . Putting conditioner on the roots of your hair will only make your hair look flat and lifeless.
What you should do instead: Put conditioner on the hair behind your ears to the tips. This will make your hair healthy and bouncy.
3. You should never ever ever ever brush your hair when its still wet. Your hair is more fragile when wet so brushing it will cause breakage. For women with curly or wavy hair it can also cause frizz.
What you should do instead: Just let it dry, or if you really need to brush it use your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
4. Your hair may look greasy if you don't wash it everyday but a quick way to make it look clean (and smell clean) is to sprinkle baby powder on your roots. The powder will soak up all the oil making your hair look clean, but be careful, if you use too much it will make your hair look grey.
5. Hair doesn't grow faster if you trim it. Hair grows about 1/4-1/2 of an inch a month regardless of if you trim it or not. Although hair does tend to grow faster in the summer. You should still get regular trims, it doesn't make hair grow faster but it does get rid of split ends.
6. Brushing your hair when it is tangled from root to tip can cause breakage.
What you should do instead: Work the tangles out of your hair starting from the tip and work your way up using downward strokes.
7. Coconut oil can be used as a deep conditioner. Before bed rub it in your hair and put it in a bun. Go to bed and once you wake up shampoo your hair. It will feel softer than it ever has before.
8. If your hair is staticy or has lots of fly aways, rub a dryer sheet through your hair. It smoothes the fly aways and makes your hair smell good.
9. Switching your shampoos to prevent build up is a myth. Your hair can't tell when you switch shampoos. If you have build up you need to switch shampoos permanently.
